Papilio cresphontes
Citrus trees are favored by the caterpillar of the giant swallowtail. This one was found on the tangelo tree in my yard while I was harvesting fruit near the top.
A dirty bird left his mark on a leaf?
A closer look
shows that the caterpillar, known as an "orange dog" in some parts of
the country, is eating the edge of the leaf.
The caterpillar has attached its
tail end to the branch.
Look carefully at this picture. Do you see the silk safety belt
used to keep it head end up?
Here is the chrysalis, pupa, as
it will appear for some
weeks.
Here
is the under side
of the wings of the recently emerged butterfly.
